Now with WhatsApp you can send short videos or "Live Photos" as animated GIFs

Today a new version of WhatsApp for iOS has been released that includes support for animated GIFs, among other interesting new features.

After a recent update that adds a lot of new camera features and the ability to draw in photos, WhatsApp (now owned by Facebook) released today another update that supports animated GIFs.

Not only you can send and receive animated GIFs files via WhatsApp for iPhone, since you can also send any short video or "Live Photo" from the library, as an animated GIF. WhatsApp 2.16.15 is required to be able to use these new features, available for free in the App Store.

The release notes warn that only reel video camera are six seconds long or less, you can be sent as animated GIFs. Just use the media selector to select a video as an attachment, then click on the new option to convert the native video into an animated GIF file.

To send a "Live Photo" as an animated GIF file, simply select a file in your photo library and choose Select as GIF. It is worth mentioning that you can also make a splash 3D Touch on any Live Photo, then slide up and choose Select as GIF, as shown in the images below.

To send a Live Photo as a normal photo without the part of the movie, you must choose Select as photo on the shortcut menu.

This is certainly an interesting option for WhatsApp users who want to keep a more "dynamic" chat, although it would be appreciated that the limitation of the 6 seconds per animated GIF extends a little more.
