Viewing IP addresses of LAN devices on Mac OS



If for some reason you need to see the IP addresses of other computers on the same LAN as a Mac, the command line tool "arp" works pretty well. You prefixing arp before making any application Terminal, find other IP devices and their MAC addresses.

How to find the IP addresses of local devices arp


To begin, open the Terminal application from / Applications / Utilities. Arp is a tool that uses the ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) to display and control functions solving the network address. For the purpose we want to achieve here, the simplest use of arp is attach a - (hyphen), that is:

  harp


This will return a list of the devices found on the local network, including other Macs, PCs, routers, iPhones and iPads, showing both its LAN IP address and its corresponding individual MAC addresses. So, you'd see something like this:

If the output does not appear updated, or missing an IP I think that you think should be there, do ping the IP broadcast (usually it is the ultimate result of arp - ". 255" which ends with), then run arp - to again:
  Terminal ping 192.168.0.255%

 PING 192.168.0.255 (192.168.0.255): 56 data bytes
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.6: icmp_seq = 0 ttl = 64 time = 0.079 ms
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq = 0 ttl = 64 time = 1.922 ms

 In this example a new IP 192.168.0.10 is compared with previous results, since the disposirivo just joined the network. 

You can ignore the suggestion of protocol at the end of the results of arp, in this example, even though the devices are displayed as "ethernet" really are all in a Wi-Fi wireless network.
