Eye with smartphones and teenagers

Psychology professor at San Diego State University Jean Twenge has stated that the use of smartphones is having a radical impact on the behavior and mental health of teenagers in the United States .

"The arrival of the smartphone has radically changed all aspects of adolescents' lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental health ... Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. [...] Much of this deterioration can be attributed to their phones . "

Far from being common the widespread complaint that teens spend too much time looking at their screens, Twenge has a lot of solid data to support his arguments.

The article, entitled Smartphones have destroyed a generation? , Is full of graphics and each shows the launch of the iPhone as a point of reference. A 2017 survey of more than 5,000 American teenagers found that three out of four owned an iPhone .

They show that today's teenagers spend far less time doing activities with their friends, have fewer relationships, including sex, and even delay the age of driving license .

Teenagers who spend three hours a day or more on electronic devices are 35 percent more likely to have a suicide risk factor , a truly chilling fact.

The depressive symptoms of children increased by 21 percent between 2012 and 2015, while girls increased by 50 percent, more than double. The increase in suicide, too, is more pronounced among girls. Although the rate increased for both sexes, three times as many girls aged 12 to 14 committed suicide in 2015. The suicide rate is still higher for children, partly because they use more lethal methods, but girls are starting to match this terrible Statistics .

Twenge is quick to point out that smartphones are not the only factor, but she argues that is the key. Adolescents use a great deal of communication tools, but they are less communicative than ever in direct interpersonal relationships. They are able to relay live their life by Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram, but really their lack of communication is maximum.

The key is to always educate on responsible use of mobile phones, and to put a number of rules on it while they are minors. Never ever advance the purchase of a phone at very early ages, as it is totally unnecessary .
