How much data does a 5 minute YouTube video spend?

Our mobile devices allow us to do many things that before seemed almost science-fiction. I think, when, years ago, I had to do a week-long train ride that became soporific. That of mobile internet was in diapers , in fact there were only mobile phones with WAP connection. I wish I could have enjoyed YouTube at the time.

The point is that it is now common to be able to view videos on different platforms. Now, many times we are careful, since any video streaming consumes an amount and data nothing negligible. Here it is clear that "how much more sweet sugar" , that is, the greater the definition, the greater the consumption of data.

In my particular case, I have a 10 GB monthly plan, of which I usually have between 2-3 GB at the end of the month. It is true that I do not usually view videos outside the home or workplace, where I have a Wi-Fi connection, unless it is an emergency and you have to use the 4G connection for it. Anyway, we have prepared an approximation to what consumes a connection to YouTube according to the quality that we have configured.

The low quality video is not going to be worth much and we do not usually use it. Think 240p to 320p. Low quality settings will use approximately 0.3GB (300MB) per hour. SD quality video is a standard 480p video. SD quality video uses approximately 0.7 GB (700 MB) per hour. HD quality video is between 720p and 2K (remember, the application adjusts the flow).

HD quality video uses about 0.9GB (720p), 1.5GB (1080p) and 3GB (2K) per hour. UHD quality video uses a lot of data. A 4K stream uses approximately 7.2GB per hour. The compression, the variable quality based on the conditions of the network and the cache of your phone will give the key of a consumption that comes to be described above.

How much can I transmit with my data plan?

A typical data plan is not at all unlimited and in our comparison we will put as examples data rates of 2GB, 5GB and 10GB, except for the 25GB of Yoigo's "infinite" rate (we now explain the quotation). In Spain, at the moment, there is no tariff that data infinitely , although they promote it. If your data rate is different from any of these, you can do the conversion easily. If you want to stream media when using the data connection, this is what each plan would give you.

A 2GB plan

6.5 hours of low quality video. 2.8 hours of standard definition video, 2.2 hours of 720p video, 1.3 hours of 1080p video, 0.6 hours of 2K video and 0.25 hours of video in 4K

A 5GB plan

16.25 hours of low quality video, 7 hours of standard definition video, 5.5 hours of 720p video, 3.25 hours of 1080p video, 1.5 hours of 2K video and 0.6 hours of 4K video

A 10GB plan

32.5 hours of low quality video, 14 hours of standard definition video, 11 hours of 720p video, 6.5 hours of 1080p video, 3 hours of 2K video and 1.2 hours of 4K video

The standard has been followed, for convenience, of 1,000MB = 1GB and not the actual calculation of 1.024MB in a GB. And remember that these are approximations. Due to the way the data is compressed and changed depending on the situation, the measurements may vary somewhat. Anyway, it fits quite a bit into reality.

Well, this is roughly what you're going to spend if you watch videos. The normal thing in these cases is to go pulling Wi-Fi connection to keep our data plan to the maximum. Each one, depending on what he has hired, must adapt his minutes of viewing. Nothing more frustrating than anything else beginning the month you miss the warning that your plan is about to run out.

We would like you to tell us in comments what use you make of your data connection regarding online video viewing. Do you prefer to safeguard them for other issues? Do you usually use Wi-Fi connection for this? Which video broadcast platform do you like best and why? We wait for you in the next post.
