Apple invests in the development of micro LED displays for Apple Watch

Judging by the latest rumors, Apple will be using a micro-card LED displays on future versions of Apple Watch.

Micro LED technology was developed in 2000, but the first screen, made with its use, was created only in 2011. The resolution of this screen is 640 x 480 pixels.

micro LED displays similar in many ways to the OLED display. No backlight is needed, as each pixel emits light by itself. They differ in the fact that in the micro LED displays the LEDs are used, each of which can be a pixel. This significantly reduces the power consumption of the displays. In addition, the screens much brighter than the current OLED panels.

micro LED panel can be applied in носимой electronics. For example, in the Apple Watch, where a long time of operation with a single charge and a maximum of brightness is required.

In 2014, Apple bought the company LuxVue, which, rumor has it, had to help in the development of screens for Apple Watch first generation. Later appeared the information that Apple has implemented a laboratory of research and development of micro LED screens. Recently, a German company Aixtron SE, manufacturer of tools for the production of micro LED panels, has updated its equipment, to reduce the level of rejection when creating LED displays by more than 50%.

It all speaks in favor of that electronics producers are interested in new technology. In particular, this refers to the Apple company, which is directly involved in its development.

Probably the first samples of micro LED displays will appear very soon, and in devices not before 2018.
