AirPlay 2 arrives on your iPhone: What is it? What is it for?

Yesterday, Apple released the first iOS 11.3 beta for developers. This new version of the mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch brings 4 new Animojis and improvements in HealthKit. Additionally, iOS 11.3 will finally offer support with AirPlay 2 .

In fact, tvOS 11.3 will also have compatibility with AirPlay 2 . But what does this system work for? What is AirPlay 2 and what advantages does it offer compared to the first version?

With iOS 11.3 installed on an iPhone, on an iPad or on an iPod touch; or with tvOS 11.3 installed on a fourth or fifth generation (4K) Apple TV, you can use AirPlay 2 to play streaming music on multiple devices and / or rooms at the same time.

What is AirPlay 2?

If you have two Apple TV with tvOS 11.3 installed in different points of your house, you will have the opportunity to use your iPhone to play the same song on both devices thanks to the "multi-room" function of AirPlay 2.

Installing tvOS 11.3 also gives you the option to add your Apple TV to your HomeKit configuration, Apple's home automation platform. During the configuration process, you can choose a room in your home. Once this is done, the Apple TV will be shown as another device in your Casa application.

Initially, AirPlay 2 should have arrived along with the official release of iOS 11. However, the functionality was delayed . Finally, with iOS 11.3 users can enjoy it.

AirPlay 2 will be a service limited to devices with iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3 . On the other hand, third-party smart speakers and HomePod will also be compatible with this function.

Currently, AirPlay 2 (both iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3) contains many errors and its implementation is incomplete , but Apple will incorporate significant changes during the beta phase of these operating systems.
