How to make a backup of the iPhone with iTunes (2018)

Although with the arrival of iCloud many users have opted for the simplicity of Apple's cloud to make backups , there are still many that we still prefer our team to backup iPhone or iPad . And is that although essentially make a backup in iTunes or iCloud is the same, the truth is that there are some differences .

Anyway, in this post we teach you how to make backup copies of iPhone or iPad using iTunes and what is stored in them. Although it is the same as always, there are some small variations using iOS 11 and iTunes 12.7.

The advantages of backup copies with iTunes

If the cloud seems like something ethereal or you simply do not fit the backup copies in their free 5GB and do not want to buy more storage space, then backing up with iTunes is made for you. And is that the only space limitation will be the available space of your Mac or PC .

Backup copies of iTunes save the backups of your iOS devices on your computer, either PC or Mac, so you do not require an internet connection or battery to perform them. Of course, you will have to remember to repeat this process periodically.

In addition, with iTunes there is the possibility of enabling encrypted backups , to provide your backups with an additional layer of protection.

What do you need to make a backup with iTunes?

  •     A computer with MacOS or Windows.
  •     The updated iTunes software (we will use 12.7.2). You can download it from the Apple website.
  •     The charging cable.
  •     Your iPhone or iPad with iOS updated .

Although in some cases it is possible, to avoid problems it is recommended that both iTunes and iOS are in the latest available version , otherwise you can ask us to update.

What does an iTunes backup contain?

First of all, a nuance: synchronize your iPhone or iPad is not the same as making a backup . In this last one there will be almost all the data and adjustments that are in the device.

This is important: What does not contain an iTunes backup?

  •     Touch ID or Face ID settings.
  •     Apple Pay settings and information.
  •     Health data and keychain, which will require an encrypted backup .
  •     The content of the App Store or iTunes.
  •     PDF files downloaded to iBooks.
  •     Books, videos, photos, music ... that we have imported with iTunes.
  •     Photos stored in the cloud, either in the Photo Library or in My Photos in Streaming.

How to make backup copies with iTunes?

1) The first thing we will have to do is turn on the computer and the iOS device. We open iTunes on the computer and then connect the iPhone or iPad with the usb cable of the charger.

2) If it's the first time you do it, a message will appear asking us if we trust the computer . We will see a code that you will have to enter to verify your confidence.

3) In the upper left corner you will see a button with the silhouette of your device. Click on it to access information related to it. In the backup section, you will have to select On this computer. As you can see, something else below offers us the possibility that the copy is encrypted with a password, remember that if you want to store Keychain and Health data, you will have to check that option and remember the password to recover it.

4) Finally, select the option to copy . You do not need to apply or accept , the process will start immediately and you can see it in the upper status bar.

5) Once the backup copy is finished, you will be able to see the date and time of the last successful backup on that same screen.

As you can see, backing up with iTunes is also quite simple and fast. The only disadvantage is that they are not automatic as in iCloud, but it is necessary to remember to do them periodically manually.
