Samsung starts production of the first 16 Gb GDDR6 chips

Samsung has confirmed its plans to produce GDDR6 memories. They are the fastest chips announced to date. GDDR6 is a high performance memory standard, compatible with the three main DRAM manufacturers. They will have data transfer speeds of up to 16 Gbps to 1.35. Mainly intended for gaming devices and graphics cards, this type of RAM will be very useful for its contribution in the evolution of graphic processing and in the rest of the great technologies that started to gain weight last year, such as virtual, mixed and augmented realities and Artificial Intelligence.

GDDR6 memories have twice the speed of performance of a GDDR5 DRAM and consume 35 percent less power.
The new memories are based on Samsung's 10-nanometer process technology, and with its 16 Gb (equivalent to 2 Gigabytes GB) they double the potential of the company's 20 nanometer and 8 Gb GDDR5 memories. This new RAM works at a speed of 16 gigabits per second per pin, with a data transfer capacity of 72 gigabytes per second, which represents an increase more than two times higher than the 8 Gb GDDR5 with its speed of 8 Gbps per second. pin

The change to 10 nanometers from 20 nanometers has also increased production gains by 30 percent. They will be aimed at mobile servers, gaming devices, graphics cards, as well as artificial intelligence systems and networks and automobiles.

"By introducing next-generation GDDR6 memories, we will strengthen our presence in the gaming and graphics cards markets, and adapt to the growing need for advanced graphics memory in automotive and networking systems," said Jinman Han, senior vice president. of planning Samsung's memory products.

Samsung has used a low-power circuit design for its new GDDR6 to reduce power consumption by approximately 35% compared to the previous generation, moving from operating at 1.55V to only 1.35V. For the company it is also a positive evolution, since the new RAM also generates a manufacturing productivity gain of around 30% compared to its GDDR5 of 8 Gb.

Last year the Hynix company was the first to present a solution with this new generation of memories. although in that case their memories remained at 8Gb, half of what they offer that Samsung has started to manufacture, therefore it is not the first to embrace this technology, but it is the one that has managed to take its capacity with the 16 GB.

Positioning in this technology is important, since it is expected that the new GDDR6 have a key role in the development of the next generation of graphics cards and consoles. They will also play a leading role in other fields such as the processing of videos in 8K, a resolution that we saw at CES 2018 that the main television manufacturers were beginning to bet.
