Li-Fi technology: soon the internet will be transmitted through light

Although the main focus of the MWC was focused on smartphones, several products, prototypes and new technologies were also presented in other segments that stood out for their novelty. One of these innovative technologies was brought by the PureLiFi brand, which is the main figure for the expansion and operation of Li-Fi ( Light Fidelity) technology , and it promises products focused on converting "Light technology" into an alternative for the current means of transmission and communication, including Wi-Fi.

In addition to other accessories for the computer, PureLiFi brought a smartphone cover that allows the Li-Fi connection to the computer, but ...

What is Li-Fi?
The Li-Fi is the transmission and communication of all types of data through light radiation.
Instead of Wi-Fi that uses radio waves, the Li-Fi uses light waves or frequency ranges of visible light to the human eye for communication between devices.

The Wi-Fi is mainly based on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio frequencies, which are increasingly overloaded. The Li-Fi can be another alternative, another way of communication between devices.

The practical uses of Li-Fi are immense, it could happen that each lamp is an internet hotspot.

How is data communication between devices?
Communication via Li-Fi is done bi-directionally. Each of the devices will have a transmitter and a light receiver that will be responsible for the transmission.

The transmission is regulated by the intensity of operation of the LED lamps, which will then be absorbed by the receiver and transformed into an electrical signal. Such actions will not be visible to our eyes, so you can connect the Internet through Li-Fi without illuminating the place where you are.

However, the Li-Fi has some disadvantages, opaque objects such as walls prevent the passage of light signals, thus preventing data transmission, in those cases should be placed "hotspot lamps" in all divisions of a house.

Logically, this technology will require changes in the devices we use daily. Light sensors should be incorporated to receive and send signals.

Li-Fi accessories presented at MWC

PureLiFi has presented several accessories dedicated to the integration of Li-Fi in computers and smartphones. The main one has been a special cover for smartphone, in particular for Samsung Galaxy S5, which gives it the ability to connect to the Internet via Li-Fi and wireless charging . He also presented a laptop in which he inserted a panel with all the necessary elements for Li-Fi support and a USB-pluggable peripheral with the same purpose.

Currently pureLiFi products get internet transmissions up to 42Mbps and a Skype videoconference has been made using two devices connected only by Li-Fi.

This technology is still maturing, but in the not too distant future it will be in all our devices,

What is your opinion about Li-Fi? Do you think it contains the ability to become an alternative as Wi-Fi in wireless communication? Leave us your comments!
