Apple on trial: has monopolized the apps market?

Another judicial battle on the horizon for Apple. If we did not have enough with the trial against Samsung , which seems to continue to lengthen, or with the fine in Australia for the "Error 53" , comes a new trial in the United States on the monopoly of apps on the iPhone .

Has Apple monopolized the iPhone application market? That is the question that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear next Monday and that could have far-reaching implications for consumers .

The dispute is over whether Apple, by charging application developers a 30 percent commission and only allowing iOS apps to be sold through their own store, has inflated the price of iPhone applications . Apple, which has the support of the Trump administration, argues no, as is understandable.

Is the App Store a monopoly?
Apple's app store is the only legal way to install apps on the iPhone . Apple controls the rules of publication of the store and reviews the contents. In exchange, a percentage is taken in the payment or purchasing apps within the applications.

What Apple argues is that they do not buy the applications from developers and then sell them. Apple explains that they are protected from antitrust lawsuits because they are not the direct seller, the developers are . They consider the App Store as a shopping center, where Apple charges a rent to the developers for selling it.

"APPLE IS TRYING TO ARGUE THAT CONSUMERS DO NOT HAVE THE LEGITIMACY TO SUE HERE BECAUSE APPLICATION DEVELOPERS SET THE PRICE"

However, the plaintiffs argue that Apple monopolized the distribution of applications, not the applications themselves . If there were several app stores, these to compete could offer lower rates to developers that would mean lower prices to users .

This is something that already happens in Android, although the vast majority of purchases are made through Google Play, there are other application stores such as Amazon Appstore. We will see how the trial ends up being resolved. In case of failing in favor of the plaintiffs, it could mean a big change in the iOS ecosystem .

What do you think, is the App Store a monopoly?
