4 Automator tricks that will make your life easier

Performing certain tasks with our Mac can be quite monotonous and boring. For example, change the name of dozens of files. Most users would do this one by one, which could take a lot of time. However, there is an application called Automator that, after knowing how it works, can make life much easier .

Automator is an Apple application that is installed on all your computers. It allows to create automated workflows for actions such as the one mentioned above. It is not well known by most, but we tell you 10 things you can do with it.

1. Rename a batch of files

If we want the names of several files to have a certain hierarchy, it is not necessary to do it one by one. Automator can create a workflow specially designed for it .

We opened Automator and chose 'Workflow' .
In the 'Actions' menu, under the library, we choose 'Files and folders' .
In the menu on the right, we select the option 'Obtain the selected Finder items' and drag it to the main window.
In the same menu, we choose 'Rename Finder Items' and also drag it to the main window, just below the previous action.
A pop-up window will appear asking us if we want to make copies of the renamed items or directly use the originals. That is up to the user's choice .
In the box that says 'Add date or time' , we select the action that we want to use. In this example we are going to select the one of 'Replace text'. Enter the text you want.
We open in Finder the location of all the files that we want to rename and select them .
In the Automator window, we will click on the button that says 'Run' .
2. Resize images

If we have to change the size of several images , Automator can also do it quickly and easily.

We select 'Service' in the type selection window for the document.
In the drop-down menu that says 'The service receives the selection of' we choose image files.
In the 'Actions' menu, we choose 'Get the specified Finder items' and drag it to the main window.
We click on the 'Photos' section and select 'Adjust the size of the images' . We drag it to the main window, just below the previous action.
We adjust the pixel size or the percentage we need .
We save the Automator file with a name that we can remember as 'Scale images' . When we need to execute this quick action, it will appear under the Services category. So we just have to select the image, right click and execute the action in the services menu.

3. Change the format of the images

If in addition to resizing an image we need to change its format for another one, for example from JPG to PNG, Automator can also do it .

We choose workflow as file type.
In Library, under 'Actions', select 'Files and folders' .
We chose 'Get the selected Finder items' and drag the action to the main Automator window.
We select Photos and, then, 'Change type of images' . We drag the action to the main window just below the previous one.
In the box 'to type' we choose the format to which we want to convert the image .
When we want to change the format of an image, we select the file first and then click on 'Run' in Automator . A copy of the image with the new format will appear in the same location as the original photo.

4. Convert PDFs to images

If we ever need to convert a PDF file to an image , with Automator it's easy to get it.

We choose workflow as file type just after Automator opens.
In Library, under 'Actions', select 'Files and folders' .
We chose 'Get the selected Finder items' and drag the action to the main Automator window.
In the menu on the right we click on the PDF option.
Now, we choose the action to convert PDF pages into images . Drag the action to the main Automator window, just below the previous action. We configure the settings to our liking.
The following is an optional but useful step to have our conversions in a known place. We return to choose 'Files and folders' and then drag the action 'Move Finder items' under the rest of actions. In the box, we select the location where we want to save the files .
When we want to use this action, we select the PDF that we are interested in converting and we give it to 'Run' in the Automator window.
