Why is the stainless steel of the iPhone XS better than any aluminum?



There was a time, full of an enigmatic and romantic magic, in which aluminum was a much more precious metal than gold itself. It was light, resistant and abundant in nature. In fact, it is still one of the most used metals today . It's in Coca-Cola cans, in vehicles, in windows and even in airplanes. But, little by little, it has been replaced by other more resistant and durable materials such as stainless steel.

And in the world of mobile telephony, specifically in the new generation smartphones, the event has been repeated as it happened after the second industrial revolution, from 1855. The aluminum of smart phones is being replaced by stainless steel to offer a series of very useful advantages for consumers.

But, currently, there are not many smartphones made with stainless steel . A couple of them are the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max that Apple introduced and launched on the market in September. But ... why is stainless steel better than aluminum in mobile phones? Let's find out

The strengths of stainless steel



Stainless steel is a fabulous material. It is highly resistant to corrosion and its polished finish looks so bright that it gives a very premium look to mobile devices. But its greatest virtue is its durability. Its durability exceeds the vast majority of aluminum alloys . That is why stainless steel is preferable in the use of products that require prolonged and continuous use such as motor vehicles, luxury watches and ... of course, mobile phones.

Being so resistant and durable, stainless steel is ideal to avoid scratches, nicks, marks and dents . In addition, it makes it extremely difficult for a product to double over time.

Stainless steel also has its disadvantages

Although stainless steel has reached the manufacture of smartphones, aluminum is here to stay for many more years. And this is thanks to its great versatility . The iPhone XR , the Galaxy S9, the Pixel 3 and the LG V40 are made of aluminum. It is not as resistant as stainless steel but its alloys are hard enough to be used in devices with these characteristics.

The reason why aluminum is used in many smartphones today is obvious, making a phone with aluminum is much cheaper than doing it with stainless steel. Although it is more expensive per unit of weight, it is a less dense material than stainless steel.

In addition, aluminum is much lighter, lighter and more moldable than stainless steel. Ideal for making a mobile phone.

Aluminum has more than 500 different alloys


It is noteworthy to mention that aluminum is rarely used in its purest form . It is so light that its use is very limited. In practice, aluminum is mixed with other materials to obtain all kinds of different, more resistant alloys. So when you use an aluminum smartphone, it's usually a phone with 85% aluminum.

There are more than 500 different aluminum alloys. Each one with its own properties and metallic contents. These alloys are designated with a four-digit number . For example, the aluminum of a kitchen is made with alloys 1050 and 1100. An alloy very close to pure aluminum. The cans of soft drinks are a little more resistant, with an alloy 3004 of aluminum and manganese. The alloys of mobile devices such as Apple's iPhone belong to the 6000 and 7000 series (aluminum, magnesium, zinc ...).

Alloys relating to 7000 designations are often used in the manufacture of high-end smartphones . For example, Samsung has used 7003 aluminum for its Galaxy S9 and Apple also uses 7000 alloys in its mobile phones and smart watches. On the other hand, there are also 8000 alloys. But contrary to what is usually thought, these last alloys are not so resistant.
